U.S. Space & Rocket Center Space Camp selects the 2007 Scholarship Winner

'FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 24, 2007

Chestnut of Centre, Alabama this year's Trail of Tears Space Camp® scholarship winner

Eleven year old Claire Chestnut is ready to have a "blast" at Space Camp. The Centre, Alabama resident is the 2007 recipient of the annual Alabama-Tennessee Trail of Tears Corridor Association, Inc. Space Camp Scholarship. The scholarship is offered annually to a Native American child between the ages of 7-12 years and is awarded in conjunction with the Trail of Tears Commemoration and Motorcycle Ride held the third Saturday of September. Applicants compete by submitting an essay on "Why I Want to Attend Space Camp." Claire's essay made it abundantly clear just how enthusiastic she is about space and astronaut training.

Claire is part of the Cherokee Tribe of Northeast Alabama and attends Centre Elementary School. She will attend the Space Camp Parent/Child program and get a taste of astronaut training by carrying out a simulated space shuttle mission in one of Space Camp's realistic shuttle simulators. She'll also get to build and launch her own model rocket and train on NASA-developed hardware including the 1/6th Gravity Trainer and Multi-Axis Trainer. Congratulations, Claire, from all of us at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center®. We're looking forward to having you in camp.

Space Camp is the premiere immersive, educational experience for young people 7-18 years of age. Now in its 25th year, it has fostered national and international outreach programs which in addition to Space Camp includes Space Academy (1984), Advanced Space Academy (1997), Aviation Challenge (1990). The U.S. Space & Rocket Center was established in 1965 by the State of Alabama, empowered by the U.S. Congress and supported by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration; the U.S. Space & Rocket Center is the nation's leading hands-on space science museum. More information can be found at www.spacecamp.com.

The Alabama-Tennessee Trail of Tears Corridor Association, Inc. (ATTOTCAI) is a 5013-c organization that oversees the annual Trail of Tears Commemoration and Motorcycle Ride. With proceeds generated from the sales of official Trail of Tears merchandise the group provides scholarships to Native Americans, supports educational outreach, and provides historical markers to tell the story and mark the historic Trail of Tears.
